Modenas explores Egypt entry by late 2027 or 2028
The motorcycle manufacturer plans to use Egypt as a base for exports to Africa and the Middle East, with a potential partner evaluating its models.

Motosikal dan Enjin Nasional Sdn Bhd (Modenas) is considering entering Egypt by late 2027 or 2028 and establishing an export base there to serve Africa and the Middle East, according to chief executive officer Roslan Roskan.
Roslan said discussions were under way with a prospective Egyptian partner interested in Modenas scooters and electric motorcycles. The manufacturer will supply samples soon so the partner can assess pricing and market prospects. He spoke to Bernama at a showcase of Proton and Modenas vehicles in Putrajaya.
The talks followed an invitation from Proton, another DRB-HICOM group company, to explore exports through its business network in Egypt. Roslan said Egyptian trade agreements could help Modenas reach other African and Middle Eastern markets. Its existing export destinations include the Philippines, China, Indonesia and the Middle East.
Proton Holdings Bhd also intends to add models in Egypt and pursue further African expansion, deputy chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Rashid Musa said. He pointed to demand for sport utility vehicles and potential for electric vehicles, alongside bilateral ties and Proton’s local assembly operations.
Abdul Rashid said Proton’s Egyptian operations, launched in 2024, cover welding, painting and vehicle assembly. The company plans to move from the previously assembled Saga to its newer version, which he said is expected to improve fuel efficiency and performance. Changes are needed to comply with Egyptian specifications and regulations.
