MRT Corp awards RM2.69 billion Penang LRT cross-sea contract
The 5.5km extension will connect Macallum with Penang Sentral and include a 3.05km sea bridge.

MRT Corp has appointed a joint venture comprising China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), TRC Construction and Ufuk Semarak to build the Penang LRT Mutiara Line’s cross-sea extension under a RM2.69 billion contract.
Design and construction work falls under the Civil Main Contract 2 (CMC2) package. The route will run for 5.5km, connecting Macallum on Penang Island with Penang Sentral in Seberang Perai. A 3.05km sea bridge forms part of the extension.
MRT Corp said the link will give passengers a direct rail route between the mainland and the island. At Penang Sentral, they will be able to transfer to buses, ferries and KTM train services. Travel from Komtar to Penang Sentral is expected to take about eight minutes.
The company reported that construction progress on the LRT Mutiara Line had reached 16%, keeping work on schedule. Sections of the cross-sea bridge will be designed to accommodate vessels heading to the ports at Prai and Butterworth.
MRT Corp also said it was coordinating with the authorities on public safety and measures to reduce disruption for motorists during construction.
