Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has named Federal Territories Mufti Ahmad Fauwaz Fadzil to its Shariah Advisory Council (SAC), with his two-year term starting on Nov 1. The central bank said the appointment falls under Section 53(1) of the Central Bank of Malaysia Act 2009.

He takes over from Selangor Mufti Dr Anhar Opir, who joined the council on Nov 1, 2019 and completes his tenure on Oct 31. The SAC's membership will remain at nine, drawing on expertise in law, accounting, shariah and Islamic finance.

The SAC determines Islamic law governing Islamic financial business in Malaysia as the country's highest authority in this area. Islamic financial institutions refer to its rulings for shariah compliance, while courts and arbitrators use them in Islamic finance matters. It also provides BNM with shariah advice on the central bank's Islamic financial transactions and activities.

INCEIF University professor Dr Ashraf Md Hashim chairs the council and also leads Bursa Malaysia's Shariah Committee. BNM governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour welcomed Ahmad Fauwaz's appointment and thanked Anhar for his contributions over seven years.

Ahmad Fauwaz, 45, became Federal Territories Mufti on May 23, 2025. His other roles include membership of the shariah committees at Alliance Islamic Bank and FWD Takaful. He also chairs the shariah committee at Sharlife, which provides shariah advisory services specialising in digital assets.
