Penang Port deploys dedicated-spectrum private 5G network
Altel deployed the network across two port facilities, with infrastructure designed to support future automation and AI applications.

Penang Port Sdn Bhd has deployed a dedicated-spectrum private 5G network across approximately 2.5 square kilometres in Butterworth, becoming the first Malaysian port to introduce such a network.
Altel Communications Sdn Bhd deployed the network at the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) and Butterworth Deep Water Wharves (BDWW). Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil officiated at its launch at NBCT on Oct 17.
Penang Port acting chief executive officer Fakhrul Azhar Tajudin said the system is separate from public mobile networks. Both the 5G core and the port applications it serves are hosted on the port’s premises, giving the operator more control over operational data and network performance, he said.
The infrastructure is intended to enable future use of autonomous prime movers, remotely operated cranes and gantries, AI-enabled video analytics and intelligent surveillance. It can support applications needing high network availability and latency below 15 milliseconds.
Altel Group Sdn Bhd Group chief executive officer Dr Afizulazha Abdullah said reliable connectivity would become increasingly important as enterprises incorporated automation, AI and real-time applications into their operations. He said dedicated-spectrum private 5G allows businesses to shape digital capabilities around their operational needs.
