Private-sector proposals for Pulau Jerejak have been submitted, but Penang has no specific development plans for its land there, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow told the state assembly on Nov 4.

Answering Joshua Woo Sze Zeng (Pakatan Harapan-Pulau Tikus), Chow said several private developers had put forward projects covering mixed developments, infrastructure and recreational facilities. Proposals would depend on land matters and planning approval, as well as meeting the relevant authorities’ technical and legal requirements.

Chow said approval was given in 2023 for a temporary occupation licence (TOL) covering a 0.82-hectare bridge site. Renewals took place annually until 2026, with the yearly fee set at RM12,300. The bridge would connect the island with Persiaran Bayan Indah, near Queensbay.

An earlier report put the cost of a proposed 1km bridge between Pulau Jerejak and mainland Penang at RM500 million. Development is not permitted on about 85% of the island, which has forest reserve status.
