Ormond Group starts work on 396-key Desaru resort
Scheduled to open in 4Q2029, the beachfront property will target young families and the middle segment of Desaru Coast’s hotel market.

Ormond Group held a groundbreaking ceremony on Oct 16 for its 396-key Ormond Desaru resort in Johor, with opening scheduled for 4Q2029. The hospitality business of ECM Libra Group Bhd will operate the property under its Ormond brand.
ECM Libra Group’s subsidiary Desaru Beachfront Sdn Bhd owns and is developing the resort. Covering 9.1-acre of beachfront land, it is part of Phase 2 of the Desaru Coast master plan and represents the master plan’s first investment by a third party.
ECM Libra Group group CEO Gareth Lim said the infrastructure already available at Desaru Coast helped determine the investment decision. The development will be Ormond Group’s first resort-style property.
Lim said the group was seeking to serve the middle market, which he described as underserved by the existing accommodation options in Desaru and Desaru Coast. The average daily rate has yet to be finalised, while young families will be the hotel’s primary target.
Post Company, HL Design Group and Philippe Villeroux are designing the resort. Planned accommodation includes a two-bedroom suite measuring 1,400 sq ft, with private balconies. Facilities will include local-food and all-day dining restaurants, a beach bar, an infinity-edge pool, a kids’ club, meeting rooms, an event lawn and a ballroom with 300-pax capacity.
The resort will neighbour The Westin Desaru within the wider 4,000-acre Desaru Coast development. Destination Resorts and Hotels Sdn Bhd is the master developer.
