Malaysia targets fourth-quarter launch for natural gas roadmap
The plan, initially due in the third quarter, is expected to change gas pricing, supply and regulation across the country.

Malaysia is continuing work on its natural gas roadmap, with the Ministry of Economy targeting a launch in the fourth quarter. The plan is intended to guide the gas sector as the country pursues its energy transition.
Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir discussed the roadmap in a pre-recorded address to the Malaysian Gas Symposium 2026, organised by the Malaysian Gas Association. He said its value would depend on delivering projects, reforms and outcomes that could be measured.
Originally scheduled for the third quarter, the roadmap is expected to alter pricing arrangements, supply and regulation for natural gas. It is also expected to bring federal and state policies into alignment across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.
Natural gas is projected to provide 56% of Malaysia’s total primary energy supply by 2050, compared with 43% currently.
Akmal Nasrullah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the National Energy Transition Roadmap. He said the transition needed to preserve affordable, secure energy supplies while progressively cutting emissions.
He also said gas would continue to support flexibility in the electricity system, industrial output and high-value economic activity. Long-term commitments involved in gas infrastructure and supply decisions required timely investment and planning, he added.
