Gentari Sdn Bhd has agreed with Chinese EV manufacturer BYD to examine a Malaysian rollout of BYD’s flash-charging technology together with battery storage. Their joint statement said a memorandum of understanding was signed in Shenzhen.

The assessment will cover possible charging sites, infrastructure needs and storage requirements. Gentari and BYD will consider commercial and technical issues, ways to develop projects and operating arrangements for a potential large-scale deployment.

According to BYD, compatible vehicles could gain about 400 kilometres in driving range from charging for as little as five minutes when conditions are optimal. Gentari chief executive Sushil Purohit said speed alone was insufficient, stressing the importance of charger locations, reliable power and dependable operations.

PETRONAS’ clean energy arm Gentari operates more than 600 Malaysian EV charging points. Through its Gentari Go Roaming Hub platform, users can access about 18,000 points across India, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.

Malaysia recorded 53,537 new EV registrations during 2026’s first nine months, nearly double the year-earlier figure. The companies said their collaboration would also examine opportunities involving renewable power generation and energy storage.
