Malaysia and US explore closer economic cooperation in Anwar-Rubio call
The discussions included secure American technology, with no new investment or agreement announced.

Malaysia and the US explored closer economic links during a phone conversation between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to the US Department of State.
The department said the leaders considered how secure, cutting-edge American technology could support cooperation within the US-Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. That framework was upgraded in October 2025.
There were no announcements of fresh agreements or investments following the discussion. The US is one of Malaysia’s leading trade partners and investors.
Anwar and US President Donald Trump announced the partnership, which spans investment, trade, energy, advanced technology, critical minerals, security, defence, regional peace and links between people.
In July, a small group of US lawmakers pressed Rubio to reconsider American military assistance and access to markets and technology. Their lobbying followed Malaysia’s policy towards Israel and Anwar’s pledge to deport Israeli citizens found in Malaysia.
