U Mobile Sdn Bhd’s 5G network has reached nationwide populated-area coverage of 90%, beating its timetable by nine months, according to Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil. He announced the milestone at the company’s CoPA 5G event in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 6.

Chief executive officer Wong Heang Tuck said U Mobile started its nationwide deployment in July 2025. Coverage had reached 80% in March, putting that stage of the roll-out more than three months ahead of its target.

Wong said the Malaysian Book of Records had recognised U Mobile for the fastest 5G network roll-out to achieve 90% CoPA by the end of September. He said broader connectivity would help Malaysians access digital services and enable entrepreneurs and small businesses to connect with customers and improve operations.

Fahmi said Malaysia’s dual 5G network model had encouraged competition, investment and innovation in telecommunications. He also called on mobile network operators to collaborate earlier and more closely with universities, citing increased data consumption among students.
