U Mobile and Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to examine plans for indoor 4G and 5G connectivity at Bukit Chagar’s Immigration, Customs and Quarantine Complex (ICQC) in Johor Bahru.

In a joint statement, the companies said they intended to provide reliable mobile connectivity when the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link starts operating. The ICQC forms part of the link.

The companies will assess commercial arrangements alongside technical and operational requirements. Any provision of coverage remains dependent on a definitive agreement, compliance with technical requirements and the necessary approvals.

The initiative is also intended to serve about 600 government agency personnel already stationed at the complex. Passengers and visitors would be able to use connectivity to obtain travel information and arrange onward transport, the companies said.

They added that the collaboration could create opportunities for digital applications using 5G and artificial intelligence at the facility, supporting building management, operational efficiency and the passenger experience. U Mobile said its existing indoor 5G coverage extends across more than 250 sites nationwide.
