Sepang International Circuit (SIC) hopes Petronas will renew its Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP) title sponsorship when the current contract expires, potentially extending the arrangement until 2031.

Speaking to reporters in Sepang on Oct 30, SIC chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif said the circuit wanted a favourable outcome from talks involving Petronas and Dorna Sports, the commercial rights holder for MotoGP.

If the parties reach an agreement, he said SIC would like the renewal to match Dorna's five-year contract, which runs until 2031. However, SIC had received no further update on whether Petronas intended to continue, and he stressed that the company alone would decide.

His comments followed a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and MotoGP executive director Carmelo Ezpeleta. Ahmad Zahid said the proposal for Petronas to retain the sponsorship would be discussed with its president and group chief executive officer, Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz.

Petronas took over the Malaysian GP title sponsorship in 2022, succeeding Shell.
