Data centres across Peninsular Malaysia are forecast to need 8.39 gigawatts (GW) of electricity at peak demand by 2030, according to the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA). The projection reflects current estimates used for electricity supply planning.

PETRA expects Johor to have the largest requirement at 4.42GW, with Selangor at 1.48GW. It said the states’ roles as major data centre hubs require electricity infrastructure planning that accounts for expected demand growth.

By August 2026, Peninsular Malaysia had 45 completed, operating data centres, the ministry said. Their combined electricity supply capacity was 6.04GW, referring to supply that Tenaga Nasional Bhd provides through the National Grid to support their operations.

For water, PETRA projected that data centres across Johor and Selangor would require 389.04 million litres per day (MLD) by 2030. Current actual consumption reported to the National Water Services Commission was 63.90 MLD.

The figures were provided in response to Onn Abu Bakar (PH-Batu Pahat), who asked about electricity and water requirements through 2030 and completed data centres.
