Penang cruise proposal targets better port services and new routes
SPCT passenger movements reached 569,173 in January–September 2026, a rise of 52.12 per cent, according to Penang Port Commission chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin.

Better terminal services, new cruise routes and stronger tourism partnerships form a proposed ‘3I Strategy’ outlined by Penang Port Commission chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin. He said the proposal sought to attract cruise traffic while creating economic opportunities for Penang businesses and communities.
In a statement, Yeoh called for improvements to port facilities, handling capacity and the passenger experience. He also advocated joint promotions and business networking with cruise lines and regional tourism operators, with the aim of securing regular Penang calls and exploring longer visits.
Yeoh presented the proposal at a ceremony for Navigator of the Seas, which made its first call at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) on Oct 30. On board were 3,887 international passengers and 1,200 crew members, bringing the number of people arriving to 5,087.
Also serving as Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman, Yeoh suggested collaboration among travel agencies, guides, transport providers, food and beverage businesses and creative industry participants on shore excursions. He said packages could draw on George Town’s heritage, cuisine and traditional crafts, alongside community-based tourism activities.
Yeoh reported 569,173 passenger movements at SPCT during January–September 2026, versus 374,171 for the equivalent period in 2025, an increase of 52.12 per cent. He said improvements at the port should translate into stronger services, international links and opportunities for local operators.
