Malaysia’s middle-income group (M40) will be offered basic healthcare protection under MediAsas when it launches in January 2027, according to Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. He said the scheme aims to address medical inflation through affordable coverage and transparent controls on charges.

Writing on Facebook, Dzulkefly said unaffordable premiums had led policyholders to surrender 340,000 private insurance policies. He linked the ministry’s financial protection initiative to the increasing number of people seeking treatment at government facilities.

The Ministry of Finance previously announced two standalone insurance and takaful options: the standard plan, MediAsas Teras, and the standard-plus plan, MediAsas Flexi. Coverage will extend to individuals aged up to 85.

Dzulkefly said a pilot operating since the end of July in the Klang Valley lets policyholders use the Employees Provident Fund's Akaun Sejahtera (Akaun Dua) for flexible payments. The arrangement is intended to reduce their monthly financial burden.

Separately, he said Tabung Bantuan Perubatan funding had risen to RM60 million from RM40 million, an increase of 50%, to cover expensive devices including heart stents and bone implants. The government also allocated RM80 million for the Peduli Kesihatan scheme for the B40 Group (PeKa B40), he added.
