Malaysia’s communications regulator is assessing whether online games, including Roblox, need additional rules to protect children from digital risks, Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil told the Dewan Rakyat on Oct 29.

Fahmi said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (CMCF) are examining gaming trends, interactions between users, game content and safety measures provided by platforms. The assessment also draws on overseas regulatory approaches to identify safeguards suitable for Malaysia.

Separately, CMCF is seeking public input for a Gaming SubCode. Participants include app store operators, Malaysian and overseas game developers, online safety specialists, legal practitioners, researchers and the e-sports industry. Fahmi said the findings would inform consideration of regulatory measures based on evidence and proportionate to the risks.

He was concluding the Communications Ministry’s policy-stage debate on the Supply Bill 2027 (Budget 2027). He also said the government was prioritising guidance for parents on using parental controls on devices and online services.

That effort forms part of the Safe Internet Campaign, which has a Budget 2027 allocation of RM58.7 million. Its activities include the Parent-Teacher Convention and nationwide community carnivals, with education and advocacy aimed at children, students, families, teachers and communities.
