Malaysia has urged gas producers and consumers to work more closely to keep supplies reliable and global markets stable, citing the importance of energy security to investment and industrial competitiveness.

In a statement on Oct 28, the Ministry of Economy said natural gas has a strategic role beyond serving as a transition fuel. It said gas would provide flexibility and reliability for industry and electricity systems as renewable energy deployment expands and demand rises across Asia and Asean.

The ministry called for more transparent markets, predictable policies and continued investment throughout the gas value chain amid geopolitical uncertainty, disrupted supplies and volatile prices. Closer producer-consumer ties were needed to reinforce supply resilience and confidence in long-term investment, it said.

Malaysia also sought deeper ties with the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) and its observer countries on market intelligence, LNG trade, infrastructure and technology exchange. This includes longer-term cooperation with Russia grounded in dependable supply, commercial viability and mutual benefit.

The ministry said Malaysia remained committed to balancing secure and affordable energy with environmental sustainability during its energy transition.
