Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong said Malaysia and Singapore were examining how to draw investment from third countries into the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). He said their joint efforts would include facilitating exports to markets outside the two countries.

Speaking in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 1 at a business luncheon held with the Malaysia-Singapore Business Council, Gan said further avenues for cooperation involving Johor and Singapore were being considered. During his one-day working visit, he expressed hope that details of how both sides could support each other would be announced in due course.

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani put Singaporean firms’ pledges for the JS-SEZ at more than S$5.5 billion (RM17.6 billion). He said the investments were generating thousands of high-value jobs and covered sectors including solar energy, energy technology, data centres and advanced manufacturing.

Gan, who is also minister for trade and industry, said Singapore hoped to undertake a series of projects after the Asean Digital Economy Framework Agreement was implemented. He said the agreement would enable stronger cooperation among Asean members on digital matters.
