Malakoff brings 429MW Lumut plant back online ahead of deadline
The gas-powered facility resumed operations on Oct 7 and is contracted to operate until Dec 31, 2029.

Malakoff Corporation Bhd said its 429MW gas-fired plant in Lumut, Perak, returned to service on Oct 7, beating the Jan 1 deadline by three months. The facility is operated by its subsidiary GB3 Sdn Bhd.
The restart came after a power purchase agreement with Tenaga Nasional Bhd was signed in May. The contract covers operations through Dec 31, 2029.
Malakoff group chief executive officer Syahrunizam Samsudin said the plant’s open cycle configuration allows a rapid start when electricity demand increases, helping provide peak-demand capacity and support the grid’s reserve margin.
The facility is Malakoff’s second restart under the Energy Commission’s Project Category 1. The programme seeks to address growing electricity needs in Peninsular Malaysia over 2025 to 2029 by returning existing plants to service. Malakoff’s 350MW Prai plant was recommissioned on April 9.
A third facility, operated by Segari Energy Ventures Sdn Bhd, is also located in Lumut. Malakoff said the two Lumut plants could together add 1,732MW to the national grid once both are operating.
