Minister Nga Kor Ming has announced that the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) will fund repairs and improvements to council-managed public toilets, allocating RM150 million for the period spanning 2026 to 2030.

At the Toilet of the Year Award 2026 (TOTYA’26) ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, Nga outlined annual spending of RM30 million through the 13th Malaysia Plan. He said the funding would benefit the public while supporting domestic businesses involved in toilet products, sanitary fittings and technologies for public facilities.

Nga also reported that KPKT had disbursed RM154 million following approvals for maintenance and modernisation work involving 1,529 public toilets nationwide. That funding covered the period from 2023 to 2026 and went to local authorities.

Separately, the ministry is considering more locations for its six-star BMW-i Smart Toilet initiative. Nga said it intended to bring the initiative to Kuala Lumpur and state capitals, particularly areas popular with tourists. The first facility, at Dataran Putra beside Masjid Putra in Putrajaya, features automatic bidets, sensors and digital monitoring linked to KPKT’s PBTs application for tracking toilet ratings.

TOTYA’26 honoured eight facilities. Nga said entries reached 849 in 2026, compared with 345 in 2023, attributing the increase to stronger awareness and commitment to cleanliness among operators and communities. He also announced that tertiary education institutions would become the awards’ ninth category.
