Government has made no financial support commitment to AirAsia

Any corporate assistance request would be assessed against public interests, fiscal sustainability and safeguards for public funds, the Finance Ministry said.

The Ministry of Finance (MOF) has told Parliament that the government has made no commitment to support AirAsia Group Bhd financially through loans, guarantees or injections of public funds.

In its written response to Ayer Hitam MP Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, the ministry declined to address speculation and figures reported by the media, citing potential effects on markets, employees, customers and other stakeholders.

The ministry said requests for help from any sector would be considered against national and public interests, the sustainability of government finances and safeguards for public money. Applicable laws and procedures would govern those assessments.

The Edge Malaysia had reported on Oct 1, citing sources, that the MOF was supporting AirAsia’s fundraising effort. The ministry was reportedly assisting Alton Aviation Consultancy in attracting lenders and investors for the group’s proposed fundraising of up to US$1 billion (RM4.1 billion).

AirAsia recorded a second-quarter net loss of RM527.16 million for the period ended June 30, 2026, compared with RM154.88 million a quarter earlier. Revenue declined 14.5% to RM5.09 billion. The airline has attributed its financial difficulties mainly to sharply higher jet fuel prices following the West Asia conflict.

The MOF said it was tracking fuel prices, currency movements and the conflict’s effects on aviation and connectivity, while consulting industry participants and technical experts. It noted that AirAsia carried about 41% of the 104.5 million passenger movements at Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) airports in 2025, alongside nearly 60% of domestic passenger movements.
