The government has approved more than RM250 million for transport projects supporting Kelantan’s East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) development, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) said. The approval covers a bus terminal and preparatory work for a proposed rail extension.

In a statement on Nov 3, MOF said RM30 million would go towards constructing the bus terminal at Kota Bharu ECRL Station. More than RM200 million is earmarked for preliminary work on the proposed extension linking Kota Bharu with Rantau Panjang.

Preparations for the extension include initial design work, land surveys and investigations, and an environmental impact assessment (EIA). They also cover preparation of the Railway Scheme and site works ahead of the project’s next implementation phase, the ministry said.

MOF said the investment was intended to improve transport infrastructure and support economic development in Kelantan. It expects the development to encourage business activity, bolster logistics, draw investment and generate local employment, while helping spread development benefits beyond major cities.
