PTP second phase to be expedited, says Loke

The expansion is expected to lift annual container capacity to 48 million TEUs, while Carey Island and Midport would serve different cargo needs.

The Transport Ministry will speed up development of the second phase at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), Transport Minister Anthony Loke told the Dewan Rakyat on Oct 6. He said the ministry supported the project to address current demand and sustain Malaysia’s competitiveness with regional hubs.

Loke said PTP’s expansion was expected to increase its annual container capacity to 48 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). He also said the proposed Carey Island third terminal and Midport in Port Dickson would not impede PTP’s development because the ports would handle different cargo.

PTP is a transshipment hub serving Denmark-based Maersk Line and Gemini Cooperation, the partnership between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. Loke said general cargo, rather than containers, would be the initial focus at Carey Island, while Midport would chiefly support Negeri Sembilan’s development and would lack the capacity to rival PTP.

The government also plans to increase capacity at Port Klang, where utilisation has exceeded 73%. The port handled 15.14 million TEUs in 2025.

The Westports expansion covers berths CT10 to CT17 and is expected to lift its handling capacity to 28 million TEUs. Port Klang’s combined capacity, including Northport, is expected to reach 34.2 million TEUs.

The Westports expansion and the third terminal at Pulau Carey together are expected to bring Port Klang’s overall annual capacity to 60 million TEUs.
