Bursa Malaysia edges higher as trading turnover rises
Decliners outnumbered gainers despite the benchmark's advance, while trading value increased to RM2.89 billion.

Bursa Malaysia finished the Oct 5 session with the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) at 1,631.75, up 0.88 of-a-point. The previous Friday's closing level was 1,630.87, with the local market's advance accompanying gains across regional markets.
Trading involved 4.78 billion units, valued at RM2.89 billion. The previous Friday recorded RM2.70 billion in turnover on 4.23 billion units. Market breadth was negative: 599 counters declined and 564 gained, with another 523 unchanged.
The benchmark started at 1,633.42, an opening gain of 2.55 points, and traded within a range of 1,630.95 to 1,640.46 during the session.
Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng identified technology stocks as key beneficiaries. He said local institutions had made net purchases of RM352.4 million the previous week, supporting domestic liquidity, although continued foreign selling remained a constraint.
Among heavyweight stocks, CIMB finished at RM7.73 after adding eight sen, while Public Bank gained five sen, closing at RM4.71. Tenaga Nasional's four-sen rise took it to RM13.00. Maybank ended at RM10.00 after losing two sen, and IHH Healthcare fell four sen, finishing at RM7.76.
Sector indices showed mixed results. Financial Services reached 19,140.14 after gaining 99.63 points, while Energy lost 3.09 points, ending at 829.94. Plantation closed at 8,931.03 following a decline of 125.52 points.
