BS Freshmart is aiming to grow its network to 35 branches by 2028, following the opening of its 29th outlet in Kluang. BS Freshmart Sdn Bhd managing director (administration and legislation) Mohammad Rasul Razuan outlined the target to Bernama after the opening ceremony on Sept 30.

Mohammad Rasul said the company plans vegetable farms and a cattle-rearing project in central Peninsular Malaysia to obtain vegetables and fresh meat more directly. Should those projects succeed, it will consider additional outlets in central and western Johor, with Kulai among the locations.

He said the retailer has nearly 2,000 employees and concentrates on fresh fish supplied by its 28 boats operating around Mersing. The fishermen’s group also has a plant and storage facilities that can hold about 1,500 metric tonnes of seafood. Stocks are built up ahead of the monsoon, which lasts roughly from November to March, to maintain supplies when fishing is affected.

Outside Johor and Pahang, its network includes three Selangor outlets in Kuala Selangor, Rawang and TTDI Jaya. It also operates one outlet in Seri Manjung, Perak, and another in Gua Musang, Kelantan.

Mohammad Rasul said the business grew from fishermen selling their catch directly, with its first market established in Mersing in 2004. He credited the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) with providing assistance and guidance for the expansion. To mark the Kluang opening, the company donated daily essentials to 70 asnaf families locally.
