Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has launched SSDS+, a platform supporting the issuance, holding and custody of tokenised bonds and sukuk, with payment and settlement available around the clock. The central bank said on Oct 20 that it developed the system internally.

SSDS+ keeps digital securities ownership records and handles transfers of tokenised securities. Its link to Rentas+ enables payments for bond purchases to move securely in central bank money, according to BNM. The bank said the platform aims to make transactions simpler, give financial instruments more design flexibility and widen investment access.

The system builds on the Scripless Securities Depository System used by Malaysia’s wholesale financial market. BNM said SSDS+ can accommodate tokenised government and retail bonds as well as wholesale issuances. Tokenisation records securities and their associated rights as digital tokens; for bonds and sukuk, distributed ledger technology provides shared ownership and transfer records across a network.

Rentas+ began operating in October 2025, enabling year-round interbank transfers and settlement at any hour. Its predecessor, Rentas, was introduced in 1999.
