Amazon Web Services (AWS) introduced its national AI programme, Semarak AI Malaysia, in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 4. The company said it aims to help businesses, government officers and members of the public develop solutions by building their skills and access to artificial intelligence tools.

Hussein Mohd Ali, AWS country manager for Malaysia, Pakistan and Brunei, outlined three components serving different groups: AI Negara, AI Ekonomi and AI Rakyat.

Under AI Negara, AWS said up to 445,000 government officers would be offered Amazon Quick, allowing public sector teams to try agentic AI in routine tasks. AI Ekonomi targets SMEs and Malaysian software companies, with AWS aiming to provide Amazon Quick and Kiro to support business growth and expansion into regional markets.

The company said AI Rakyat would address AI skills among polytechnic students and in schools and community centres across Malaysia.

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani also cited estimates for AWS’ planned RM29.2 billion investment in Malaysia through 2038. He said it was expected to contribute RM57.3 billion to gross domestic product (GDP), while supporting more than 3,500 jobs at local businesses on an annual average basis.

Johari said developing talent and suppliers was necessary to help Malaysian companies benefit from digital economy growth and improve their competitiveness regionally and globally.
