Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has referred questions about paid leave for about 100 employees to Media Mulia Sdn Bhd, which publishes Utusan Malaysia and Kosmo!, saying the government had already intervened to rescue the company previously.

Speaking in Petaling Jaya on Nov 4, Anwar said the earlier rescue took place when the publisher encountered operational difficulties. Reporters had asked him about the justification for its rationalisation exercise and whether compensation would be provided to affected employees.

Media Mulia director and chief financial officer Abd Wahid Idris had announced on Nov 2 that the rationalisation would include placing about 100 employees on paid leave.

Abd Wahid said Media Mulia was examining how its business is structured and operated, alongside its strategic direction. He said the review was intended to support the company's viability over the long term as the media industry faces challenges.
