Financial technology company Airwallex intends to double its Malaysian headcount in 2026, with the expansion supported by increasing cross-border transactions, vice-president of global marketing Jon Stona said.

Its workforce in Malaysia increased by 66 per cent during 2025. The company also recently relocated to an office with space for more than 160 employees. Airwallex handled remittance transactions worth more than RM2 billion during 2025 as demand increased among Malaysian businesses operating internationally.

Stona said the company had spent several years developing its Malaysian operations, including setting up an office and local team. He said locally based employees helped Airwallex understand customers while working within shared global operating principles.

Speaking at a fireside chat attended by McLaren Racing chief executive officer Zak Brown, Stona said Airwallex also wanted to respond more quickly to customer needs and reduce the time between receiving feedback and making changes.

Stona said its McLaren Racing partnership had provided an opportunity to demonstrate its payment and financial operations capabilities internationally. Brown said McLaren increasingly worked with business-to-business partners to improve operations, with travel to 24 countries creating requirements such as managing multiple currencies.
