AirAsia Group Bhd said it aims to begin serving Bahrain by March 2027, although the timing remains dependent on regional conditions. The airline also announced the appointment of its Bahrain board as part of its expansion plans.

Tony Fernandes, AirAsia Group advisor and Capital A chief executive officer, said regional geopolitical conditions had prompted changes to the initial plans. He said the group remained committed to Bahrain, which it views as a gateway linking ASEAN to the Middle East, Europe and beyond.

Dr Serra Kirdar will chair the board, while Datuk Fam Lee Ee will serve as vice-chairman. The other members are Dr Faisal Khalid Kanoo, Nawaf Al Zayani, Akram Safa, Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon and Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim. The airline said all are non-executive directors.

AirAsia Group, previously AirAsia X Bhd, said the appointments follow a November 2025 letter of intent between Capital A Bhd and Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications. In February 2026, AirAsia announced plans for Bahrain to become its Middle East hub.
