Malaysia is exploring cooperation with Netflix that could bring post-production work and professional training to the country, Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said after meeting the streaming platform’s representatives in Jakarta on Oct 21.

Speaking to Bernama, Fahmi said Malaysia wanted to broaden Netflix’s interest beyond filming locations to include post-production activities. The proposed cooperation would seek more opportunities for Malaysian professionals, including editors and colour graders.

The talks also examined how Netflix chooses films and other productions. Fahmi said understanding that process could help Malaysian films, animation and intellectual property (IP) find audiences overseas. He described the meeting as his first discussion with Netflix, with a focus on film, animation and the creative economy.

According to Fahmi, Netflix agreed to visit Kuala Lumpur to see the new office of the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas). Further talks on possible cooperation are expected. Finas also hopes the platform will consider Malaysia, including Kuala Lumpur, as a venue for some regional training programmes.
