Macallum-Penang Sentral LRT construction scheduled for third quarter of 2027
The alignment will include a 5.5km marine bridge, with completion targeted for December 2031.

Work on the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) connection between Macallum and Penang Sentral is scheduled to start during the third quarter of 2027, according to Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari. The route will cross the Penang Strait to connect the island with Seberang Perai.
In a written state assembly reply, Zairil said MRT Corp, the implementing agency, was evaluating tenders for the alignment and expected to finish that process in November. Construction would follow the appointment of the main contractor, starting with preliminary work before major activities, including bridge construction.
Zairil said the final route includes a 5.5km marine bridge and main stations at Macallum and Penang Sentral. Bagan Luar Station has provisional status to allow for possible expansion in future.
Completion is targeted for December 2031, alongside the Silicon Island-Komtar section. The wider Mutiara Line is expected to start operating in December 2031, covering approximately 29.67km with 20 stations and two additional provisional stations.
