Industry participants have been asked to recommend policies covering hydrogen, smart grids and energy storage as the Ministry of Economy seeks input on Malaysia’s energy transition. Deputy Minister of Economy Datuk Seri Mohd Shahar Abdullah made the call in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 22.

Addressing the Asia Energy Storage, Hydrogen & Future Grid Summit (EnerGex 2026), Mohd Shahar urged those attending and organising the event to compile practical recommendations for the ministry. He said industry perspectives would help improve how the 13th Malaysia Plan and National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) are implemented.

The ministry also wanted suggestions on speeding up implementation and feedback on regulations constraining investment, he said. For energy projects involving large capital commitments and long development timelines, he pledged clear policy direction, transparent milestones and coordination among ministries.

Mohd Shahar said mechanisms including the National Energy Transition Facility were being used to reduce the risks of early-stage ventures and attract private and institutional capital. He also backed public-private partnerships and blended financing, with financial institutions helping structure green infrastructure projects that could obtain funding.

He encouraged research institutions, utilities and system operators to exchange data securely for planning, renewable energy integration and better use of storage assets. He said the transition must benefit the domestic economy through local manufacturing, skilled employment, system integration and increased participation by small and medium enterprises.
