Remotely Hiring Staff During the COVID-19 Pandemic Presents Challenges

While the COVID-19 pandemic has rapidly changed many organizations work situations, it has also changed how companies interview and onboard new hires.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in many companies and organizations transitioning to a remote working situation and the implementation of work-from-home options.

While many companies have decided to freeze hiring any new employees, and others have been forced to lay off part or all of their team, other companies are looking to increase their capacity and have had to adapt to new hiring procedures.

Platinum Recruiting, a recruitment solution firm in Kelowna, BC, asked the questions, “In the temporary absence of face-to-face interviews, what are the best alternatives? How can you roll them out quickly? Is it feasible to complete the hiring and onboarding process remotely?”

In answer their own questions, Platinum has been advising companies as to new hiring practices and how to properly onboard new employees despite work-from-home conditions and social distancing.

“A strong onboarding process can drastically shorten the window for a new hire to become a productive and efficient member of the team,” stated Platinum. “At its best, it also provides a welcoming feeling, encouragement, and improves collaboration from day one. This process is important regardless of when you’re hiring, but requires extra care and consideration when working in a fully remote environment.”

The onboarding process now needs to begin as soon as a contract is signed. While a new employee may be working out their final two weeks with their previous employer, it doesn’t mean they can’t begin the onboarding process in order to expedite familiarizing a new employee. While this may be the norm during the pandemic, this represents a good opportunity to digitize onboarding documents.

Platinum also advises employers to remember to facilitate mentorship during this time. “Mentorship is a very important piece for any staff member, providing a go-to individual for questions and advice. If you are able to provide a mentor internally, assign a mentor that is not their direct manager. This typically facilitates more open discussion and prevents the new employee from avoiding questions in the early stages to prove themselves.”

It’s important to understand that this is a difficult time for employers and employees alike, and that assistance is available through recruiting agencies such as Platinum.
