Pune, India - March 14, 2018 /MarketersMedia/ —

The travel and tourism industry consists of revenues generated by passenger airlines, passenger rail, foodservice, hotels and motels, travel intermediaries and casinos and gaming. The airlines industry comprises passenger air transportation, including both scheduled and chartered, but excludes air freight transport. Industry volumes are defined as the total number of revenue passengers carried/enplaned (departures) at all airports within the specified country or region, excluding transit passengers who arrive and depart on the same flight code. For the US and Canada, transborder passengers departing from either country are considered as part of the international segment. Industry value is defined as the total revenue obtained by airlines from transporting these passengers. This avoids the double-counting of passengers.

The passenger rail sector consists of all passenger transport by 'heavy rail' services, including international, inter-city, regional, and suburban trains ("Commuter trains" in US terminology are included). However, light rail, tram/streetcar, Metro/Subway, and similar trains are not included. Sector volumes are given in passenger-kilometers (PKM) and international traffic is counted in the country of origin. Sector values in the report consist of revenues generated by operating companies through ticket sales, and so exclude state subsidies. Foodservice is defined as the value of all food and drink, including on-trade drinks not drunk with food, for immediate consumption on the premises or in designated eating areas shared with other foodservice operators, or in the case of takeaway transactions, freshly prepared food for immediate consumption. Foodservice is restricted to the sale of food and drink in specific foodservice channels defined below and excludes vending machines.

Unorthodox Trump faces toughest test yet in NKorea summit

Jun 20, 2018

SINGAPORE — Embarking on a self-described "mission of peace," President Donald Trump puts his seat-of-the-pants foreign policy to its toughest test yet as he attempts this week to personally broker an end to North Korea's nuclear program in talks with Kim Jong Un. The impulsive American president, who just this weekend sowed chaos within the Western alliance, is set to face his match on the global stage as he prepares to meet Kim in Singapore on Tuesday. In the historic first meeting between the leaders of the technically-still-warring nations, Trump is prioritizing instinct over planning. Unlike traditional summits between heads...

Jun 20, 2018

SINGAPORE — A new surveillance camera was installed and restaurants closed on Singapore's Sentosa Island, a popular tropical getaway thrust into the spotlight ahead of a summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Located a quarter mile (400 meters) off the coast of the city-state, Sentosa is no stranger to celebrities and VIPs. It is linked to the city by a bridge and home to high-end resorts, golf courses and a large amusement park. The macabre history of the island, which will become the venue of the historic summit on Tuesday, is less known. In...

Malaysia's central bank governor quits amid land deal furor

Jun 20, 2018

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysia's central bank governor has become the latest senior official to resign amid a corruption probe of the former government that appointed them. Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said Wednesday the government accepted Muhammad Ibrahim's resignation and a replacement will be named once the Malaysian king gives his consent. The resignations come less than a month after a surprise May 9 election defeat for then-Prime Minister Najib Razak ended six decades in power for the former ruling coalition. The central bank is under scrutiny over a 2 billion ringgit ($500 million) land purchase from Najib's government. Proceeds...
